Ashes to Light Concert - Amelia

Nelly Ben-Or was imprisoned in the Łódź ghetto as a child and subsequently escaped to Warsaw where she spent years living under a false-identity, narrowly evading recapture by the Nazis. She would eventually settle in England and find international success as a concert pianist and as a leading exponent of the Alexander Technique.

This evening recounts her story with her first-hand testimony, alongside live music for piano and violin, performed by Alex Metcalfe and Katharine Gorsuch Johns, including works by Chopin, Bach and Bloch.

American violinist Katharine Gorsuch Johns studied with Miriam Fried at Indiana University before being taught by Itzhak Rashkovsky at the Royal College of Music. She then embarked on a playing career which has taken her to venues such as Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and St David's Hall. As a member of the prize-winning Bronte String Quartet from 2001 to 2006 she performed at IMS Prussia Cove and on BBC Radio 3. Since working as a freelance violinist, she has played with Independent Opera at Sadler's Wells and the English Chamber Orchestra. Following a move to Sussex with her family, she has enjoyed taking opportunities to perform chamber music locally as well as in London.
