On 20 July 2022 Cabinet approved in principle the In-year Budget Review 2022/23 and Sales, Fees and Charges (including car parking) 2022/23.

The documents are available to download here: Agenda for Cabinet on Wednesday, 20 July, 2022, 6.30pm - Tunbridge Wells Borough Council. They are items 9 and 11 on the agenda.

Before Cabinet makes a final decision, we would be grateful for your views. We must fix the financial shortfall faced by the Council. We are actively seeking creative solutions.

Why we need to make changes now.

A decade of austerity has squeezed the Council’s finances and the impact of the pandemic has further reduced income which has resulted in a budget gap of £944,000 for the current year. However, inflation is increasing the cost of delivering services with contracts costing 10 per cent more and energy costs have doubled. Council Tax increases are capped at 2 per cent which creates a budget gap of £2.6 million for next year and this will continue to grow each year if we do not act now. This situation is affecting Councils across the country and the Local Government Association has said that the underfunding of councils nationally is now £8 billion.

The Council needs to close the budget gap to ensure that essential local services can continue to be provided. Cabinet has agreed to a formal consultation for four weeks, from Monday 25 July – midnight on 5 September. Your views will be collated and considered by the Cabinet Member for Finance and Performance. A report will then be brought back to a Cabinet meeting in early September.

We now need your views, take the survey.
